The Sign of The Don is the bistro and bar sister establishment of The Don (a fine dining restaurant serving well sourced, modern British dishes). It is located on the site of the original Sandeman Port and Sherry Cellar – a fact of particular interest to me as I adore port especially after a meal. They serve modern British dishes, some of which have influences from their Spanish and Portuguese past.
The bar is bright and airy, and the bistro below has lots of character as if you have walked into someone’s personal wine cellar; as well as a quiet private dining area.
We tucked into our juicy lamb burgers whilst enjoying our surrounding and admiring their vast selection of wines from around the world.
Also, we were recommended the Hawkshead ‘First Vines’ 2011 Pinot Noir by our friendly New Zealand waiter who said that it was from a winery in the northern part of New Zealand. The pinot noir had lovely smokey oak notes and wonderful lingering notes of roasted plum and cinnamon, which complemented the lamb burgers perfectly.
Lovely pleasant service, an interesting menu, and a great place to relax and enjoy a large selection of wines, dessert wines, ports and sherries. We will be returning to check out the port selection, and some other dishes that caught our eye!
