We tried out new pork restaurant Blackfoot in Exmouth market. We went during the soft opening when it was 50% so we were able to give the menu a good workout but frankly we’ll be heading back soon because there were loads more things that we wanted to try but our eyes were bigger than our stomachs. When we talked to Tom Ward (owner) we really liked the farm to fork ethos, they source their pork from Dingley Farm in Suffolk and care about all aspects of the rearing process including how the pigs are killed and butchered.#
We got the porchetta roll (£6.50) which was divine, meltingly tender belly and loin of pork with a punchy salsa verde, tucked in a crusty ciabatta roll. They’ll be selling these from the counter to take away at lunchtimes and if you work anywhere near Exmouth Market you should get one of these, it’ll be the highlight of your day.
We also got the crispy ribs (£10) with a marinade of chilli, lime, lemongrass and ginger. I was expecting really strong Asian flavours but these weren’t quite so successful, the deep frying seemed to have killed the marinade and the fresh aromatics of chilli and spring onion on top lacked heat. I think a final basting of the marinade once it’s on the plate would help and maybe asking people about their preference for spice levels so they could decide to leave the chilli seeds in (or not).
As sides we got chips (£3.50) and a fabulous salad of fennel, orange and almonds (£5), the fresh zinginess really helped to cut through the richness of the pork, sides are definitely not an afterthought here.
We finished up with Key Lime Pie (£5.50), which seemed to have been baked, it had a lovely light texture and the lime was nicely complemented by the ginger biscuit base. Portion sizes are definitely big enough to share but it’s worth saving room for dessert!
