The Pig Idea is an initiative set up by Thomasina Miers, the founder of Wahaca, and Tristam Stuart, the guy behind the brilliant Feeding the 5000 campaign, making 5000 lunches out of food that would otherwise have been thrown away. Their new idea is that pigs should be fed food waste i.e. food that is unfit for human consumption but is totally fine for pigs and that would otherwise been sent to landfill.
Actually this isn’t a new idea, it’s a really, really old one, pigs got domesticated in the first place because they were so great at “recycling” our food waste into delicious pork and bacon. Mmm bacon… wait where was I? Oh yeah, our crazy present day situation where pigs have been banned from being fed food waste and so have to eat specially grown soy feed. THIS IS NUTS. Rainforest is being chopped down to grow this feed, farmers are having to pay ridiculously inflated prices for it, food waste is rotting in landfill. So would you like to help save the rainforest, help our hard pressed farmers and create some delicious bacon in the process? Mmn bacon… Must. Stay. Focussed. That’s a rhetorical question, who wouldn’t right? Well very little is required of you to do these multiple good deeds. Just follow these 3 steps:
1) Sign this pledge to tell our politicians that a lot of us want this
Do it. Do it now. Done? Great, maybe read some of the stuff on the website that will tell you more about why this is so important.
2) Tweet @ThePigIdea with any great pork recipes you have or any great puns for pork based dishes and hashtag it #peoplespig . If your recipe wins you’ll get to help cook it live on stage with Thomasina Miers on 21/11/13 and you could win dinner for 4 at Wahaca!
3) Get yourself to Trafalgar Square on 21/11/13 between 12-4 pm. You’re going to want to put this date in your diary because some amazing chefs are going to be cooking a free lunch with the pork from eight pigs that have been reared on food waste. Yeah you heard me right FREE FOOD. Really we’re helping by stuffing our faces, we’re just selfless like that!
