Tomatoes on Toast
We went to sample the new bar menu selection of cocktails and bar snacks.
1)Lavender Flip £9
I really loved this. Flips are made with egg white and it gives a lovely egg nog quality to the drink. The predominant flavour in this was lemon, which was great for me as I adore lemon. The lavender was much more subtle which was good as sometimes I find its heavy floral notes can be overpowering.
2)Coronation Sour £9
Richard mentioned that he has designed this drink to appeal to non Scotch drinkers. For me the egg white in this drink overwhelmed the other flavours and I think it might fall between 2 stools, it’s too unorthodox to appeal to traditional Scotch drinkers and I’m not sure anyone else would order a Scotch based drink.
3) Agincourt Martini £9
This uses Chambord raspberry liquer to give a twist to a traditional martini. I loved it, probably my (C) favourite drink of the night.
4) Brandy Daisy 1876 £9
Thanks Richard for this recommendation. This cocktail showcases the beautiful flavours of the Francois Voyer VS Cognac used: oaky depths; vanilla; light, summery floral notes; and fruity, citrusy notes – my (J) favourite cocktail of the evening.
The bar snacks that accompanied our cocktails were:
i) Whole Almonds – with smokey BBQ salt.
ii) Tomatoes on Toast £6
Loved the balsamic dressing, though I would have loved the bread to have been rubbed with some garlic. Complemented the Lobster Burger and Welsh Rarebit.
iii) Welsh Rarebit £6
Great presentation with the lovely wild mushrooms on top. Enjoyed the hint of mustard, which was not overpowering.
iv) Lobster Burger £8.50
Great appearance, good brioche bun, but not a strong lobster flavour.
Reform Social is perfectly situated just off Oxford Street and would make a great pit stop in a heavy afternoon of shopping. Now I’m a bit older I really appreciate a bar with comfy sofas and a nice atmosphere that enables me to have a good conversation without loud pounding music in the background.
Thank you to Richard (Bar Manager), Greg (Bartender), and Louis (Waiter) for looking after us during the evening. We would recommend visiting – we are already planning our return visit!
